Is rabies on the rise in Oregon?

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Within the past year, Oregon has had 11 positive rabies cases in the Cave Junction area, and several in other areas of the state. Our state has been averaging 6 to 7 cases of rabies annually, mostly in bats. The 2010 report includes: 9 foxes, 1 coyote,  and 1 goat.

Under Oregon law, dogs are required to be vaccinated for rabies and it is strongly recommended for cats. We recommend that all dogs and cats have  current rabies vaccines. Even the nicest pets can bite someone if sick or injured, or provoked. Protect your pet, and protect your family.
