Parasites can be internal or external, and many of the same parasites your pet gets can frequently affect people, too!
The first one we usually think of is tapeworm, but we commonly see roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia. These parasites live in the intestine, and can make a pet very sick. It is best to detect parasites early, before your pet gets sick. This is why we are always pestering you for those smelly stool samples. Some of these can also make you sick… the Centers for Disease Control estimate more than 10,000 human roundworm infections yearly, with 700 of those losing their eyesight permanently. Yep, we want those stool samples from your pets at least once a year – to protect your pet, and to protect your family.
Fleas and ticks are common, but so are heartworm and ringworm (actually, this is a fungus). We also see cases of sarcoptic or demodectic mange. Think of how one mosquito bite makes you itch; now multiply that many times for a pet with fleas. Prevent flea problems with Sentinel and Program, both of which sterilize the fleas your pet picks up. Eradicate fleas with Advantage or FrontLine. Always be careful to read label directions, as many canine flea products are toxic to cats. We recommend you only buy flea products from veterinarians, as our products really are safer and more effective than retail flea products in a store.
