July Pet of the Month | Eddy

Lovable Eddy

July’s pet of the Month is Eddy, he is a 13-year-old domestic shorthair coming to Dogwood since 2008. Most recently Eddy came in this June, weak and vomiting. We examined and tested his blood, which showed elevated liver values and hyperthyroidism. We started Eddy on the prescription drug Tapazole, a Chinese herb, Long Dan Xie Gan Tang, and a liver supplement. So far so good, Eddy is taking his medicine and on the mend. MGM’s Newest Roaring Feline – CASPER!

As summer is synonymous with blockbuster movies, movies are synonymous with the iconic MGM lion, celebrating his roar since 1924. There’s a new feline in Hollywood, our very own hospital kitty, CASPER! Now when does he receive his Hollywood star?

June Pet of the Month: Myah

Magnificent Myah

Myah is a jovial 7-year-old Welsh Corgi who’s been coming to Dogwood since a spunky pup of 8 weeks. Overall, she’s been healthy. Myah sees us annually for her wellness exam and when she’s not feeling well. Myah suffers from back pain with the possibility of disk disease. At one point, she visited us twice monthly for acupuncture therapy. Today she is doing much better and is receiving monthly acupuncture treatments for maintenance, eating a veterinary-recommend diet, taking natural supplements, and pain medication as needed. We all look forward to hearing Myah’s friendly “hello” whenever she walks through our door!

Joey Our Amazing Cancer Patient – Update!

His prognosis was poor. He was paralyzed. Several specialists worked with him and found heart disease, a malignant cancerous mass next to his heart, and paralysis. When Joey first came to Dogwood, his future was grim so we started him on nutritional therapy (veterinary-specific diets), herbal supplements, and routine acupuncture treatments. Joey’s owner gave a tremendous amount of optimism and support in his care.

It’s now a year and half later and Joey is celebrating his monumental 15th birthday! He’s feeling good, paralysis is gone, and he’s doing as well as an old guy can. Last week, he came in for his monthly acupuncture treatment and x-rays to monitor cancer growth. The results came back today and show no signs of cancer progression!

Happy Birthday to you, Joey! You simply are amazing!

I have a real honor, having been elected next year’s President of Gresham Rotary. This month we are holding a Wine Raffle on April 30th, and I’m hoping everyone I know will purchase raffle tickets for $5 each–first prize: 50 bottles of wine, second prize: 25 bottles, and third prize: 10 bottles. Not only will you have several chances to win, but 100% of your gift goes directly to the community (locally and worldwide). Tickets can be purchased with me personally, at Dogwood Pet Hospital (I’ll keep a few at the front desk), or I can drop them in the mail.

Remember Polio not too many years ago? As part of Rotary International, perhaps the world’s largest international humanitarian organization, we decided in 1985 to eradicate Polio! With help from other organizations (WHO; Bill Gates Foundation), Rotary has now vaccinated over 2 Billion children, and only a few thousand cases of Polio now exist in only 4 countries!! I encourage you to watch our video of Rotary International’s Polio Plus Campaign (click here to view) documenting the immunization of 136 million children (over a one week span).

Our club recently joined 6 other area clubs and brought fresh water supply and sanitation to a village in Bali, Indonesia. Rotary hopes to carry this on to the Whole World.

Over the last 15 years, our hospital cat, Casper, has been a common fixture around Dogwood Pet Hospital. He often spends his Golden Years comfortably nestled on the receptionist’s desk eagerly accepting and giving affection to all that stop to visit. As a pet ambassador, Casper has spent many years visiting and nurturing patients during recovery. At 20, we are enthused to report that Casper is still healthy and happy!

So, you’re thinking about getting a bird…

Great! For some people, a bird can be a fantastic pet. However, for any potential bird owner, there are several things that are important to think about.

In the wild, birds thrive on a great deal of territory and many birds also thrive on a large community. In other words, most birds live to fly and to socialize. Unfortunately, these are often the very things we take away from a bird when we choose to have them live in captivity. Birds are intelligent, emotional animals with very specific needs different from cats and dogs. If you are thinking of getting a bird, please make sure you are prepared for a needy, long-lived (in some cases, over 50 years!) animal.

Much in the same way new parents buy all the baby supplies they can think of BEFORE the baby arrives, the same strategy is best for birds. Pre-purchasing will also decrease the likelihood of impulse buying. Make sure you have the set up, and then look around for your perfect feathered companion. It can be much more difficult to purchase a bird and then realize how many more dollars are needed just to house, feed and entertain this new pet.

First off, most pet stores do their best to not sell dangerous or unnecessary products to bird owners. However, some sales personnel may be under-informed or not as up-to-date as one would like. Make sure you do the research first and go into the store with a list of things you’ve decided you need. Better yet, consult with your veterinarian about what is best for your new bird! For example, did you know most birds do not actually thrive on an all seed diet? That some metal-based toys can be very dangerous? That adding vitamins to the water are not likely necessary? The good news is that there are many valuable resources available, especially if you are willing to take your time.
