Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Morrow – Gresham Veterinarians

Gresham VeterinarianChuck Hawkins, D.V.M., Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist

Dr. Hawkins graduated from Purdue University. After proudly serving as a veterinarian in the United States Army, he brought his family to Portland.

With the help of his family and friends, he built Dogwood Pet Hospital (literally–with hammer, saw, and tape measurer). In 1978, Dr. Hawkins opened his hospital and has created a loving, compassionate, and dedicated practice over the last 30 years.  Not only does he create a bond with his patients, he also deeply cares about his clients and their families. Many of our clients have trusted Dr. Hawkins’ veterinary care and expertise for decades. Time and time again, Dr. Hawkins has been described by both clients and staff as passionate, caring, inspiring, and dynamic.

Realizing a need to go beyond the conventional approach of veterinary medicine, Dr. Hawkins developed an interest in holistic veterinary care (treating your whole pet, not just the specific problem) with a combination of Western medicine, Chinese medicine, nutrition, and herbal therapies. He received acupuncture training through a five-month course by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society.

During his career, he has continually given back to the community in which he loves. He has served as a Boy Scout Leader, an active church leader, on several city and county committees, and is past president and an active member of the Gresham Rotary. In addition to his formal community service, he has been routinely known for the first one to lend a hand by helping his staff and their families, neighbors, family & friends.

When Dr. Hawkins is not at Dogwood Pet Hospital, he enjoys photography, woodworking and home projects with his wife, Sandi, hiking (ask about his mountain climbs), long-distance bicycling (literally hundreds of miles), and spending time with his loved ones including Flicka, as seen in his picture.

Krista Morrow, D.V.M.

Krista MorrowDr. Morrow earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. One of her biggest passions as a veterinary student was the field of pain management, specifically concerning arthritic patients. She was highly involved with orthopedic research and different therapeutic modalities for companion animals.

Her experience as a veterinarian, in a clinical setting, taught her that laser therapy significantly helped her patients. Laser therapy helped some patients regain the ability to walk normally again after suffering from severe back problems, or arthritis. Many patients were able to significantly decrease or stop anti-inflammatory and steroid use. The side effects of these drugs can create additional health problems, including high risks for kidney or liver compromised patients and the reduction or cessation of their use greatly increases their quality of life.  She also found that laser therapy had the ability to heal much faster than with pharmaceutical use alone. She knew this non-invasive therapy could replace drugs, was much safer for her patients and she had to do something to make it more available to devoted pet owners.

Dr. Morrow is professionally certified by the American Institute of Medical Laser Applications to treat companion animals and equine athletes, and is a trained Veterinary Medical Laser Safety Officer.

Dr. Morrow’s favorite hobbies include exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest, hiking, biking, running, and relaxing with her two crazy cats while reading a good book. She is a two-time triathlete, and knows first hand the benefits of laser therapy on sore muscles.
